What is Tabnine?

Tabnine is one of the veterans of code assistance — it offered intelligent completion before even Copilot — but it eventually found a niche of its own: privacy and intellectual property. While most assistants send your code to a vendor's cloud, Tabnine can run on your own infrastructure, with so-called 'IP-clean' models (trained on permissively licensed code, to avoid legal gray areas).

So it's first and foremost an enterprise choice: IT departments, regulated sectors, teams that simply cannot let their codebase pass through a third-party service. Beyond completion, it offers chat and an agent, like its competitors.

Worth knowing: the offering recentered on enterprise and the free tier was discontinued, which makes it less relevant for an individual developer or a curious tinkerer. And self-hosting, while it answers a real need, means heavier setup. Where Cursor or Copilot target the mainstream, Tabnine owns a 'privacy and compliance first' positioning.
