GitHub Copilot: review, test, pricing and alternatives (2026)

GitHub Copilot is the pioneer — the one that, back in 2021 and well before the ChatGPT wave, showed developers what AI could do for code. Its strength is still that autocomplete fluidity, right inside VS Code, JetBrains or Neovim, without changing your habits. The context-aware chat knows your repo and answers questions without leaving the editor. For repetitive tasks and everyday code, it's a real, immediate time-saver; it's also free for students and open-source maintainers.

You do need to know where it stops, though. Its suggestions need review (it suggests fast, sometimes off-target), and on long reasoning or multi-file overhauls, agent-editors like Cursor or a dedicated chat like Claude now go further. Copilot remains the most natural on-ramp into AI-assisted coding — and a daily companion many no longer work without.

Our verdict: for autocomplete and everyday coding without changing editors, Copilot stays a safe pick and the simplest place to start. For heavy overhauls or long reasoning, pair it with an agent-editor like Cursor or a chat like Claude.
