What is Claude?

Anthropic — founded by OpenAI alumni around an obsession with safety — gave Claude a personality of its own: calm, nuanced, and formidable the moment writing or reasoning over long texts is involved. Where other assistants impress with breadth, Claude stands out for the depth and poise of its prose.

It's the assistant many writers, lawyers, analysts and developers end up adopting for serious work. Its very large context lets it swallow a report, a contract or an entire codebase and discuss it with nuance; it follows complex instructions without flattening them, and tends to explain its reasoning rather than just assert an answer. Artifacts and Projects also make it a fine collaborative writing workshop.

The trade-offs: its extension ecosystem is slimmer than ChatGPT's, web browsing isn't always available depending on the plan, and its caution can tip into over-hedging — you'll sometimes get a pile of 'it depends' where you wanted a clear call.

Also worth knowing: 'Claude' isn't just an assistant, it's a whole Anthropic family. Claude Code is the coding agent that lives in the terminal (it understands a codebase, edits multiple files, runs commands). Claude Cowork is the agent that runs end-to-end work tasks autonomously while keeping a human in the loop. And Claude Design generates visuals and mockups. They all rely on the same Claude models and subscription; exact capabilities and access depend on your plan (check the official site).

Our verdict: for anything that calls for finesse in writing or rigor in reasoning — a long document, a contract, a deep analysis — Claude is our first pick, ahead of ChatGPT. Treat it as your writing hand and your spearhead on big documents, and keep a more generalist assistant alongside for real-time web and quick errands.
