Gemini: review, test, pricing and alternatives (2026)
Google's AI assistant, woven into your whole ecosystem.
Gemini — Google's AI assistant, woven into your whole ecosystem. Google-ecosystem users who want an assistant inside their email, documents and phone. Editorial rating: 4/5 (Recommended).
What is Gemini?
Gemini is Google's answer to ChatGPT — first launched as Bard, then renamed and powered by Google DeepMind's in-house multimodal models. But calling Gemini just another chatbot misses its real bet: ubiquity. Rather than a 'destination' you visit, Google pushes it everywhere you already are — Gmail, Docs, Drive, YouTube, Android, the search bar.
That's where it earns its keep: summarizing an email thread without leaving Gmail, drafting in a Doc, analyzing a photo from your phone, or answering a current-events question grounded in Google Search (a real edge over assistants that answer 'from memory'). The free tier is generous; the subscription unlocks the most capable models, a longer context and deep Workspace integration.
The limits flow from that positioning. On long, demanding writing it stays a notch behind Claude. Its behavior can be uneven across languages. And it all hinges on your Google account: a privacy trade-off to accept. In short, if your digital life orbits Google, Gemini is unbeatable day to day; otherwise its appeal narrows.
Our verdict: choose Gemini if — and only if — you already live inside the Google universe: there, it saves you serious time every day. Outside that ecosystem, or for genuinely demanding writing, Claude or ChatGPT remain the better bets.
